Scott Sexton, PharmD

Scott Sexton, PharmD, is an assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy at Ferris State University. Scott represents Ferris State University in initiatives to improve the practice of pharmacy and its impact on population health. Previous experiences include clinical practice in both community pharmacies and family practice offices. Scott has developed practice models to increase the access and utilization of harm reduction measures in community pharmacies. Using these practice models he collaborated with the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists to implement a state-wide harm reduction initiative, increasing the utilization of naloxone products by roughly 400% in participating pharmacies.

He is a member of the American Pharmacists Association and has served on national committees for this organization. Scott served as the Project Director for a 1-year HRSA Rural Communities Opioid Response Program planning grant, and he currently serves as the principal investigator for the 3-year HRSA Rural Communities Opioid Response Program implementation grant, serving Mecosta, Newaygo, and Osceola Counties.

Dr. Sexton has practiced in the office of District Management for a chain pharmacy, serving as the resident to the Clinical Coordinator for 14 stores and filling an interim role as clinical coordinator. He currently works at a family practice office as a Clinical Ambulatory Care Pharmacist, with the primary role of treating patients with chronic disease states and managing their cases to provide the best access possible to care. Through this ambulatory pharmacy role, Dr. Sexton has the opportunity to collaborate with leadership on a system-wide conversation regarding opioid prescribing. Dr. Sexton has been published many times for his efforts in opioid and SUD/OUD research, including publications in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.
